Turkish police use tear gas to prevent LGBT pride march in Istanbul

Turkish police stopped protesters and attempted to disperse those marching for LGBT rights in Istanbul Sunday, a day after the governor banned the march.

This year, San Francisco Pride's theme was "A Celebration of Diversity", according to the event's website.

Activists carrying signs declaring "No Justice No Pride" and "Black Lives Matter" appeared in New York, Minneapolis and Seattle, among other major cities.

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO Large crowds turned out for Pride marches on Sunday in New York City and San Francisco, the two USA places most associated with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights movement, with the East Coast city bringing a more political flavour to the event sparked by events there nearly 50 years ago.

Pride organizers said in a statement Sunday that the threats themselves should be dealt with rather than limiting demonstrations. They said they chose to "authorize" the arrests so the march could proceed after the activists had demonstrated for 10 minutes.
