Trump signals he will work with Republican holdouts on health bill

A handful of Senate Republicans are meeting in secret to craft a bill to replace the Affordable Care Act.

The bill proposes phasing out Medicaid's expansion program and capping Medicaid spending, repealing Obamacare taxes and restructuring subsidies to insurance customers.

An outside political group aligned with the White House, America First Policies, said it is planning an advertising campaign targeting Heller for his opposition to the bill.

It takes hundreds of billions of dollars now allocated to care for the working poor, women, children and elderly, and gives it to rich Americans in the form of a huge tax break. Obviously that means his vote could change once the bill gets amended, but it might be slightly tricky considering his reason for opposing AHCA: Medicaid.

The president said Friday he is hopeful these differences can be reconciled over the near-term.

McConnell, eager to approve the legislation next week, indicated he was open to changes before it reaches the Senate floor, but he said it was time to act.

Sandoval's presence at Heller's side was significant, because the highly popular governor is one of the Republicans who led their states to accept Medicaid expansion through the Affordable Care Act.

And in a separate statement, Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown says the GOP Senate bill would hamper the state's progress in slowing the opioid epidemic, calling Medicaid the "number one tool" in the fight against opioids.

Health care stocks pulled back Friday, but the sector was still on track to post a weekly gain of more than 3 percent. They say the GOP plan would mean fewer people with coverage and higher costs for many. "That's what I want, make sure that we're taken care of here in the state of Nevada", said Heller. It also would provide more generous tax subsidies than the House bill to help low-income people buy private insurance.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) said that holding a vote on the measure next week would be too rushed to hear input from his constituents and that he would likely not vote for it if there wasn't enough time. Its fate remained uncertain since the four lawmakers' refusal to back the Senate draft would leave Republicans short of the votes to pass it.

The Senate measure maintains much of the structure of a House bill passed in May but differs in several key ways. "The only people who are better off under their bill are millionaires and health insurance companies".

The Nevada senator joins four other Republicans in expressing opposition to the draft bill as it is now written.
