The charges against Bill Cosby, and sentences they carry

Bill Cosby declined to testify in his criminal indecent assault trial on Monday, and his defense rested after calling just one repeat witness for further questioning.

Jury members of the sexual assault trial will continue their deliberation on Tuesday and decide whether Cosby is guilty of the charges filed against him.

The Pittsburgh-area jury has been away from home for more than a week and was in the courthouse for about 14 hours Monday through a brief defense case and closing arguments. In fact, the defense team's single witness consisted of Detective Richard Schaffer, who spoke under oath about statements alleged sexual assault victim Andrea Constand made to police throughout the course of the investigation into her claims. At one point he stood at the witness box and rested his head in his hand; another time he crouched down and got very close to Cosby's face as he made a point.

The star - flanked by his wife of 53 years Camille - watched on as just one witness, a police detective, was called to support his innocence.

Cosby is charged with sexually assaulting a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in January 2004.

Actor Bill Cosby (R) and spokesman Andrew Wyatt arrive for Cosby's trial on sexual assault charges at the Montgomery County Courthouse on June 6, 2017.in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He said Cosby may be flawed, but he's not a criminal. Today is the first day she has appeared by his side in court since the case started last week. Although Constand is one of more than 60 women who have come forward accusing Cosby of sexually assaulting them throughout his career, Constand's case is the only one that did not fall within the statute of limitations for Pennsylvania state law. He noted she first told police that she cut off contact with Cosby after the incident but actually called him more than 50 times over two months.

The 79-year-old entertainer did not take the stand at his trial, but prosecutors used his deposition testimony - given in 2005 and 2006 as part of Constand's civil suit against him - as evidence. Topping it all off was the obligatory gesture towards pop-cultural relevancy with "This is all the media's fault", as McMonagle gestured around the courtroom at the reporters and Cosby accusers sitting in the audience while banging the back of his chair and repeating, "banging the drum, banging the drum". "This is talking to a lover", he added.Steele responded during his closing argument, which lasted over two hours, saying that Constand had called Cosby only three times after she left her job at Temple."To allege that this is just some relationship that is going to a different level, doesn't make any common sense", Steele replied. He said prosecutors are ignoring the conflicting information, hoping to distort Cosby's legacy. Constand - an athletic, 6-foot-tall college basketball staffer - said they made her dazed and groggy, and unable to say no or fight back when Cosby went inside her trousers.

Prosecutors will deliver their closing statements next, which will be followed by instructions to the jury. He also described three pillars of the case had been proven: 1) Cosby drugged Constand; 2) She was "legally" unconscious; and 3) She was unable to consent to sexual activity.

ALLYN: Accuser Andrea Constand sat stone-faced during closing arguments.

"When you dance outside of marriage you gotta pay the band", McMonagle said.

Cosby says he gave Constand a cold and allergy medicine to help her relax.

Among other admissions, Cosby said in that deposition that he acquired drugs to give to women he sought for sex; McMonagle asked no questions about that on cross-examination, apparently wanting to move past talk about giving drugs to women.

Cosby "taught us how to smile...and how to love each other, no matter what we look like", McMonagle said. On an unspecified date, she said, the women saw a news story about a famous man accused of drugging and sexually assaulting women.
