Republican Senator Vital to Health Bill's Passage Won't Support It

McConnell, R-Ky., has little margin for error: Facing unanimous Democratic opposition, "no" votes by just three of the 52 GOP senators would sink the legislation. Susan Collins of ME said on ABC's "This Week" when asked whether the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and President Donald Trump could get her support by week's end. Look forward to making it really special!

"I believe that the bill that the Senate will vote on, assuming they get to that point, will have some sort of mechanism to cause participation in it", said former GOP Senate staffer Rodney Whitlock.

Meanwhile, President Trump has sent mixed messages about the health care reform priorities that partly fueled his campaign.

McConnell, eager to approve the legislation next week, indicated he was open to changes before it reaches the Senate floor, but he said it was time to act.

He said his clinic mostly serves Medicaid families and kids.

Last month, the House passed their version of the bill, which would strip health care from 24 million people, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The expansion has provided coverage to 11 million people in the 31 states that accepted it.

Trump's role is expected to become more pronounced in coming days as the vote nears.

Democrats said the measure would result in skimpier policies and higher out-of-pocket costs for many and erode gains made under Obama that saw roughly 20 million additional Americans gain coverage, and some Republicans expressed concerns about the bill's cuts to Medicaid and drug addiction efforts. Sen.

One possibility is that McConnell is anxious that the provision runs afoul of the procedural rules allowing Republicans to pass the bill with a simple majority vote. Fortunately, buried in the House bill was a way out of the morass.

Much of the architecture of the House's American Health Care Act has been left intact. It keeps the pre-existing protections, but gets rid of any incentive for healthy people to buy insurance.

Toomey told the publication that he is "likely" to vote for the legislation. Of course, if we did that the millionaires wouldn't get their tax cut. The bill would replace its individual insurance coverage with new subsidies and requirements and cut federal funding for Medicaid.

Realizing they're outnumbered, Democrats and their liberal allies were planning events around the USA over the next few days aimed at building public opposition to the bill. That chamber, too, faced opposition from both conservative and moderate pockets.

To satisfy conservatives like Toomey who wanted faster cuts, those already enrolled in the program would also be subject to the cuts beginning in 2021.
