Orange County man has funeral for his son, buries the wrong man

Frank Kerrigan, 82, got a call from the Orange County coroner, who said his 57-year-old son, who is also named Frank, had died.

Eighty-two-year-old Frank Kerrigan had been told by the coroner's office in Orange County that his son, Frank M. Kerrigan had been found dead in the street.

Kerrigan told the Orange County Register that authorities said his son was identified through fingerprints and that he died from an enlarged heart and fluid in his lungs.

The mix-up began on May 6 when a man was found dead behind a Verizon store in Fountain Valley, California. The woman said there was no need because fingerprints had been used to identify the body as that of his son.

The family's lawyers say that they know the identity of the man buried in Frank M. Kerrigan's final resting place, according to KABC-TV. The bag was different from the one his son carried, and Kerrigan's favorite writing pen was nowhere to be seen.

Lt. Lane Lagaret of the Orange County Sheriff's Department declined to discuss details of the case when contacted by BuzzFeed News Saturday, citing the internal investigation and pending legal case against the department. 'Someone else had a attractive sendoff.

But Meikle was struck by the fact that what she was looking at contrasted with what the coroner's office had told her - that her brother had died peacefully.

The lawyer said the family plans to sue, alleging authorities did not properly try to identify the body as Mr Kerrigan's son because he is homeless.

Junior Frank's sister, Carole Meikle, also went to the spot where the body was found and left a picture of her brother with a candle, flowers and rosary beads.

'When somebody tells me my son is dead, when they have fingerprints, I believe them, ' he said.

When the family received Frank Kerrigan's belongings, there were red flags that pointed to the body possibly not being him.

Following the service, Frank J. Kerrigan had the body buried at the Cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre in Orange, near where his late wife was buried.

Doug Easton, a Costa Mesa attorney hired by Kerrigan, said coroner officials told him they ran the fingerprints of the dead man through a law enforcement database but didn't get a match.

It was a miraculous turn of events for the grief-stricken family, though now the question was how could such a mishap occur and who had the family actually come to bury?

Overcome with grief, he said, he patted the dead man's hair and had the casket closed, not doubting it contained his son.

Easton said the coroner's office provided the Kerrigan family with a name of that person, but the identification hasn't been independently confirmed. The family is working to restore them. Unfortunately, the younger Frank is still battling mental illness and has returned to living on the streets, according to the report.

She recalled blood and dirty blankets. 'He was dead on the sidewalk.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department released a statement to the newspaper, apologizing to the family "for any emotional stress caused as a result of this unfortunate incident" and promising an investigation. "We buried him. Those feelings don't go away".
