Menendez Weighs in on 'Devastating' Senate Health Care Bill

Pennsylvania Senators Pat Toomey (R) and Bob Casey (D) will help determine the draft bill's fate in the GOP-ruled Senate.

One of the Republican senators who's opposing his party's health-care bill as written says the Senate shouldn't vote on the plan this week.

Health reform is needed, but we must maintain the current law's gains in patient protections.

Rand Paul, R-Ky., speaks to reporters at the Capitol after Republicans released their long-awaited bill to scuttle much of President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, at the Capitol in Washington.

On Thursday, four of the Senate's most conservative members said the new plan failed to rein in the federal government's role. He said the changes he is seeking to the bill would go in the opposite direction of those sought by other current "no" votes - conservative hard-liners including Texas Sen. That likely would end the program in MI, one of eight states that expanded Medicaid with the caveat that the expansion would end if federal funding declined.

"We can not support the current bill. 'I'm anxious about poor people'". "We've got to do something".

President Donald Trump pressured the handful of Republican senators who may be planning to vote against Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's plan to overhaul Obamacare, days before the Senate is likely to begin debate on the measure.

If all Democrats in the Senate and three Republicans vote against the bill, it would fail.

"The health care bill would be so great if the Democrats and Republicans could get together, wrap their arms around it so that everybody is happy with it", Trump said.

"ObamaCare raised taxes on every American who uses health care", he said.

The Senate bill's real-world impact is not yet known, but the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office is expected to provide an estimate early next week.

"What I'm telling you is the system, the plan that we would put in place, would not allow individuals to fall through the cracks", Price told CNN's Dana Bash.

But in his interview on Sunday, Trump seemed confident in the contents of the Senate's bill, as well as its passage - although he predicted some changes to placate the senators that are now not supporting the legislation. "So, we have 142 pages to go through", she said.

Trump publicly celebrated the House bill's passage, only to criticize it in private as "mean".

According to a poll from the Kaiser Famidly Foundation, 55 percent of Americans say the Senate's bill is unfavorable, compared with 30 percent who say it is favorable.

AP writer Regina Garcia Cano reported from Las Vegas.
