Judge Finds Defendant Guilty; Manslaughter Law Extending to New Grounds?

Carter had previously waived her right to a trial, and the verdict was given in a nonjury trial by MA judge Lawrence Moniz, who said Carter's actions were not just immoral but illegal, according to The New York Times. Conrad then poisoned himself by inhaling carbon monoxide in his pickup truck.

Acting on Roy's behalf, prosecutors claimed that Carter was desperate for attention and asserted that Roy's death would provide her with the attention she craved. When he became sick because of the fumes, he stepped out of the truck, at which point Carter reportedly ordered him to "get back in". "I think she needs to be held responsible for her actions 'cause she knew exactly what she was doing and what she said".

In the days and hours leading up to Roy's suicide, Carter repeatedly sent Roy messages saying, "You just need to do it!"

Carter's sentence could range from probation to 20 years in prison. Cataldo said Carter was struggling with "baggage" of her own at the time. Roy's mother testified at Carter's trial that Roy seemed to improve after he began taking medication and getting counseling.

Another said, "All you have to do is turn on the generator and you will be free and happy".

Carter, who was 17 at the time of the suicide, was visibly distraught as she received the news.

The decision to charge Carter with involuntary manslaughter sets an extraordinary precedent, particularly for the state of MA.

It is not clear when the judge will issue his verdict. After she knew that he'd passed away, Carter did not tell his family that he'd killed himself, nor did she call police. Carter had also been treated for anorexia, and Roy had made earlier suicide attempts.

A state appeals court - and perhaps one day a federal panel - will look at this reasoning when determining whether to uphold Carter's conviction. And finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction: "'Get out of the truck.'" the judge said. According to a prosecutor, Carter "listened for 20 minutes as [Roy] cried in pain, took his last breath, and then died".

The victim's aunt Rebecca Maki added that the Roy family is "pleased with the outcome".

"If allowed to stand, Ms. Carter's conviction could chill important and worthwhile end-of-life discussions between loved across the commonwealth", Segal said.

Daniel Medwed, a law professor at Northeastern University, told The New York Times that the guilty verdict "sends a strong message to people that using technology to bully people into committing suicide will not be tolerated", but even he was surprised by the outcome.
