Government confirms flammable cladding on 11 blocks

The fire in the Grenfell Tower, a high-rise apartment block in North Kensington, London, started on June 14 and quickly engulfed the entire edifice, trapping some 120 families inside.

Consumers who think they may have a Hotpoint fridge freezer model FF175BP or FF175BG should call the free hotline on 0800 316 3826 or visit hotpointservice.co.uk/fridgefreezer.

The investigation is one of the most complex ever undertaken by the Metropolitan Police, McCormack said.

She also repeated calls for any members of the public with information about people who may have been in the tower at the time of the blaze to contact the police.

Investigators are continuing their work inside the building, and police say the fire was not deliberately set, but key questions remain about whether enough was done to prevent it.

So far the Government has received samples from 11 high-rise estates in eight local authority areas where cladding has failed safety tests.

Officials say cladding samples from 11 other high-rise buildings in eight municipalities in the United Kingdom, including in London, have also failed tests.

She added: "There is a awful reality that we may not find or identify everyone who died due to the intense heat".

They were also concerned about the fridge freezer which malfunctioned and triggered the blaze - they had established with its manufacturer Hotpoint that it had never been subject to a product recall.

New York-based company Arconic, whose product was used as one of the components in the cladding system, has said it will fully support the investigation.

The government is said to be checking 100 tower blocks per day, looking for the aluminium composite tiles.

A Downing Street spokesperson said no-one would be left to live in unsafe buildings with cladding found to be flammable.

A spokesman said residents would be allowed in at the weekend to collect more possessions "under escort from the London Fire Brigade" and recommended people pack enough belongings for a two to four-week stay. That includes "health and safety and fire safety offenses, and we are looking at every company involved in the refurbishment of the building", she said.

Some anxious tower block residents have seen contractors abseiling from the tops of their buildings to collect samples of cladding to be sent for analysis.

When speaking about the 79 people dead, presumed dead or missing, McCormack said: "I fear that there are more". We will provide additional updates as our investigations progress'.

"I know it's hard, but Grenfell changes everything and I just don't believe we can take any risk with our residents' safety and I have to put them first".

Portsmouth City Council said cladding from all its tower blocks was independently tested and the material on the 18-storey Horatia House and Leamington House came back as "a fire risk".
